Famous Movie Kisses"Frankly my dear..." In a recent survey of the favorite on-screen kisses of all time, over 60 percent of respondents reported that the kiss of Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in the cinematic classic "Gone with the Wind" was the most prolific movie kiss ever. Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas ranked second with their kiss in the 1992 thriller "Basic Instinct", while Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell finish the top three of best cinema kisses with their passionate clinch in heavy rainfall in "Four Weddings and a Funeral". Who would have thought, a movie produced nearly 70 years ago still captures the hearts of movie buffs the world over? It just goes to show, some great things don't change. Kissing Story: "Social Kissing" by Andrew RusbatchThis week's article is a very special story from Andrew Rusbatch, co-author of "Save My Marriage Today", who tells us how the Europeans have got it right... I am a firm believer that the Europeans got it right when they embraced the power of the kiss and made it a common part of their greeting. Variations on which cheek you start on, and how many kisses are in the sequence vary from country to country, but in general the Europeans seem to have got it right when it comes to expressing feeling when greeting friends and loved ones. I was part of a family that wasn't all that into touchy-feely forms of expression, and this is typical of the environment and the age in which I grew up where some of the last vestiges of a Victorian upbringing trickled down to greetings and you addressed someone by their title and certainly never touched them beyond a firm handshake or a nod. The society in which me and my friends were raised was masculine and proper, and anything more than a handshake or nod would have been greeted with a raised eyebrow or a startled expression. It's hard to say what spawned it, and perhaps it was a result of the global culture we all live in now, but as we grew from awkward teenagers into young adults, the group of people I associated with began to hug each other as we greeted. Some even kissed on the cheek or in the air beside the cheek. Physical forms of affection were no longer hidden behind closed doors, and it was not unusual to give your friend a hug and a kiss and tell them how much you have missed them when you greet. The point here is not to judge society in the past and say it was wrong, but certainly as society embraced a much more European feel to greetings, social boundaries seemed much more relaxed. A hug and a kiss seems to convey so much more meaning, and for some people, the opportunity to greet someone so enthusiastically can literally make someone's day. When is the last time you greeted a friend with real meaning and gave them a hug or a kiss? How did it make you feel? How do you think it made the person receiving it feel? And that is the wonderful thing about kissing as a form of greeting. It conveys so much warm feeling to the person receiving it, and it relaxes the boundaries that we set ourselves. Kissing may simply feel good physically, but it has many other benefits, as well, most of all the mental and emotional difference it can make. At a time when someone needs to feel loved or valued, a kiss from someone special can make everything better. It may make someone's day!
